Skra Waterfalls and Blue Lake

Τα νερά στην πλαγιά του καταπράσινου Πάικου κυλούν δημιουργώντας καταρράκτες και μικρές λιμνούλες. Η μεγαλύτερη από αυτές είναι γνωστή ως “γαλάζια λίμνη” ή «Σμαραγδένια λίμνη» λόγω του όμορφου χρώματός της, ή Λίμνη Σκρα, επειδή βρίσκεται κοντά στο χωριό Σκρα, περιοχή όπου κατά τον Α΄ Παγκόσμιο πόλεμο είχε διεξαχθεί η ξακουστή νικηφόρα Μάχη του Σκρα.
The waters on the slopes of the green Paiko Mountain flow creating waterfalls and small ponds. The largest of these is known as the “blue lake” or the “Emerald lake” because of its beautiful color, or Lake Skra because it is located near the village of Skra, the area where the famous victorious Battle of Skra was fought during the First World War.
The lake with its emerald waters, which reflect the wooded slopes, is ideal for dipping and swimming. I read that the color of the lake is due to fossilized organisms laying at the bottom of it. Further down the waterfalls showers you with their clean and cold water. The beauty of the landscape is unique. Between raining water, curtains of moss and foliage, you feel like you are in a fairyland.

Day trip to valley of Tempi

Τα Τέμπη ήταν ένας αγαπημένος προορισμός των παιδικών μου χρόνων. Σε κάθε μας οικογενειακή μετακίνηση μέσω της εθνικής οδού Θεσσαλονίκης – Αθηνών κάναμε πάντα μια στάση στα Τέμπη για ξεκούραση. Δεν υπήρχαν τότε τα τούνελ και το νέο τμήμα του αυτοκινητοδρόμου, που από τον Απρίλιο του 2017 συντόμευσαν την διαδρομή. Ο δρόμος ήταν στενός κι επικίνδυνος καθώς περνούσε μέσα απ’ το φαράγγι, ανάμεσα στα δυο βουνά, τον Όλυμπο και τον Κίσσαβο, σύριζα στους απότομους βράχους. Μας άρεσε τόσο πολύ να περνάμε από εκεί …! θες η μοναδική άγρια ομορφιά του τοπίου, θες η αίσθηση του κινδύνου, η προσμονή για βόλτα και ξεκούραση από το πολύωρο ταξίδι … ;
Ίσως να αποτελεί και για εσάς μια πολύτιμη παιδική ανάμνηση.
The valley of Tempi was a favorite destination of my childhood. In each of our family movements through the national road Thessaloniki – Athens we always made a stop in “Tempi” for rest. There were no tunnels and the new section of the highway at that time, which from April 2017 shortened the route. The road was narrow and dangerous as it passed through the gorge, between the two mountains, Olympus and Kissavos, so close to the cliffs. We loved going through there so much…! do you want the unique wild beauty of the landscape, do you want the sense of danger, the anticipation for a walk and rest from the long journey…? It may be a valuable childhood memory for you too.

The lake with water lilies

Η λίμνη Ζορίκα βρίσκεται στο Ανατολικό Ζαγόρι, ανάμεσα στα χωριά Φλαμπουράρι και Γρεβενίτι. Το όνομα Ζορίκα το πήρε από το ρέμα που κυλάει λίγο πιο χαμηλά, αλλά είναι σε όλους γνωστή ως «η λίμνη με τα νούφαρα». Την συναντούμε δίπλα στον επαρχιακό δρόμο κατεβαίνοντας από το φράγμα του Αώου προς τα Ζαγοροχώρια.  
Είναι μια πολύ μικρή, πανέμορφη λίμνη που περιβάλλεται από πεύκα του είδους “μαύρη πεύκη”. Η επιφάνειά της καλύπτεται από νούφαρα με λευκά άνθη. Αποτελεί έναν σπάνιο βιότοπο για πολλά είδη, μέσα στην καρδιά του πυκνού δάσους. Βλέποντας τη παρθένα ομορφιά της νιώθεις ότι βρίσκεσαι σε κάποια προϊστορική εποχή, τότε που στην περιοχή ζούσαν μικρές ομάδες ανθρώπων, που επιβίωναν κυνηγώντας και συλλέγοντας καρπούς.  
Zorika Lake, the “Lake with water lilies” is located in East Zagori. We meet the lake on the provincial road descending from the dam of Aoos river to Zagorochoria. It is a small and beautiful lake surrounded by pines of the species “black pine”. Its surface is covered by water lilies with white flowers. It is a habitat for many species.
We arrived late in the afternoon. The water lilies were half-open and a multitude of birds were flying over them (probably ash wagtail and yellow wagtail).
The location is ideal for a short stop, for a picnic or coffee among the tall trees.

Μια βόλτα στην Μηλιά Γρεβενών και την γύρω περιοχή μας πηγαίνει πίσω εκατομμύρια χρόνια στην ιστορία της γης.       
Την δεκαετία του 1960 το χωριό κινδύνευσε από κατολισθήσεις και εγκαταλείφθηκε. Μια εκκλησία, μια βρύση, ένα πέτρινο καμπαναριό, γκρεμισμένοι τοίχοι διώροφων και τριώροφων σπιτιών, έμειναν να θυμίζουν το παλιό χωριό. Η Μηλιά ξαναχτίστηκε λίγο βορειότερα σε πιο σταθερό έδαφος, στην περιοχή όμως το έδαφος έκρυβε σπάνιους θησαυρούς.
A walk in Milia, Grevena and the surrounding area goes back millions of years in the history of the earth.
In the 1960s the village was in danger of landslides and was abandoned. A church, a fountain, a stone bell tower, demolished walls of two- and three-storey houses, remained reminiscent of the old village. Milia was rebuilt a little further north on more stable ground, but in the area the ground hid rare treasures.
